Why do I get a zip file?

Because a split usually produces several PDFs, and browsers block multi-file downloads. When the split produces a single file you get that PDF directly instead.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Remove the password first with the unlock tool, then split the result. An encrypted document cannot have its pages read until it is opened.

Separate each output file with a semicolon and use hyphens inside it: 1-3; 4; 5-last produces three PDFs. An open-ended range like 10- runs to the end of the document.
